Text Box: The library holds, on microfilm, a number of local newspapers, our earliest being The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald from 1857. Newspapers are a rich and varied resource – the advertisements tell us about shops and prices; readers’ letters give the flavour of public opinion at the time; the old photographs, which started to appear at the beginning of the twentieth century, present a visual record of people and places; and the articles themselves give the history of politics, industry, sports, clubs and societies. There is also the columns of births, deaths and marriages and obituaries. The Library holds the following local papers: Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald 1857 to date Dalry and Kilbirnie Herald  1894 - 1926 Irvine and Fullarton Times 1874 - 1879, 1893 - 1950 Irvine Herald  1874 - 1950 Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston News 1906 - 1908 Stevenston Gazette  1893 - 1926 Index to the Birth, Death and Marriage Intimations in The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald This enormous indexing project is currently being undertaken by volunteers and is at present complete up to 1959. To search the database click here. There are also separate databases for casualties of  World War I and World War II. This news comes from the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald of 23rd  February, 1900. The adverts for emigrants to Canada came from the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald of 19th January, 1900.
