9th October 2008

"The Devil’s Breath" by David Gilman

As October is Local History month, the group members were pleased to welcome Local History Librarian Norma Cullen to this session. She gave a presentation with many old photographs and drawings of Ardrossan in bygone times. There were fascinating facts and stories about the area, including:

· Glasgow St was originally intended to have a canal through it from the harbour out to Glasgow

· At one time there were as many as 5 train stations in Ardrossan

· The tale of William Wallace and how he managed to create a distraction to allow him to slip into Ardrossan Castle and capture the soldiers garrisoned there. The castle is now said to be haunted by his ghost!

We also saw a photograph of Princes Street, where Ardrossan Library now stands.

Norma had prepared a brief quiz which the youngsters enthusiastically took part in.

Overall, the youngsters thoroughly enjoyed their journey through old Ardrossan.

Norma invited the youngsters to use the facilities offered by the Vennel Local and Family History Centre in Irvine.

Christine thanked Norma for attending and for the fascinating talk.

Some members voted for their favourite book in the Royal Mail Awards shortlist.

Everyone was encouraged to attend events at the North Ayrshire Storytelling Festival. Christine was most enthusiastic about the sessions to Ardrossan Library.

Next month’s book is "Skulduggery Pleasant" by Derek Landy.

18 September 2008

"Blue Like Friday" by Siobhan Parkinson

All seven book group members attended the September meeting, and we were pleased to welcome a new member, too.

We spent some time looking at various magazines specialising in reviews of children’s and teenagers’ books which has given us ideas for books we may like to read.

The members were encouraged to write reviews for the Royal Mail Awards, particularly as a competition has been organised.

Next month’s book is "Dragon’s Breath" by David Gilman.

Ardrossan Junior Reading Group

21 February 2008

"Apocalypse" by Tim Bowler

Three book group members attended the February meeting, and two of them had read and enjoyed this month’s book. This was despite the fact that the novel deals with a number of difficult issues including life & death, religion, relationships, and the end of the world. It was agreed that it was an excellent story which had them "on the edge of their seats".

The members were told that the group have been registered to take part in BRAW, the Scottish Children’s Book Awards. Our category will be Younger Readers, age 8 – 11.

Next month’s book is our youngest member’s choice - "Stargirl" by Jerry Spinelli.

If you would like to join the group, please contact Anne Noble at the Education Resource Service, Tel: 01294 219206
